Case details:

Service: Cargo & Ship Damage Survey
Vessel: Multipurpose Dry Cargo Vessel
Location: Castellón, Spain
Cargo: Soda Ash in Bulk
Principal: Owners / P&I interests

Overview

A cargo and ship damage survey was carried out onboard a multipurpose dry cargo vessel in Castellón following an incident during the discharge of soda ash in bulk.
During cargo operations, a shore crane grab impacted the starboard bulkhead of cargo hold No. 2 in way of a ballast tank. The impact perforated the tank while it contained seawater, resulting in water ingress into the cargo hold and wetting part of the remaining cargo.
The attendance included inspection of the affected cargo and structural damage, examination of the damaged area from inside the ballast tank, collection of wet and dry cargo samples, review of the quantities segregated during discharge and monitoring of the initial repair works.
Approximately 184 MT of wet soda ash were segregated during the discharge operation. The damaged steel area was subsequently cropped and renewed, with repairs completed before the vessel’s departure.

KEY OBSERVATION

The incident resulted in both structural damage to the vessel and contamination of the bulk cargo, requiring coordinated assessment of the damaged structure, affected cargo and subsequent repair and mitigation measures.
