Yacht Pre-Purchase Surveys in Spain

AB SURVEYORS provides independent yacht pre-purchase surveys in Spain for prospective buyers of second-hand motor yachts and sailing yachts. A pre-purchase survey assesses the yacht’s apparent technical condition before acquisition, helping buyers identify visible deficiencies, maintenance concerns and areas requiring further examination. Our inspections are adapted to the yacht’s construction, installed equipment and agreed scope. Findings are documented in a written technical report, with relevant observations, photographs and inspection limitations.

Independent Yacht Pre-Purchase Inspections

Purchasing a used yacht involves technical considerations that may not be evident during a viewing or from maintenance records alone.

A pre-purchase condition survey provides an independent examination of reasonably accessible parts of the vessel at the time of attendance. Its purpose is to document apparent condition and identify observations that may be relevant to the buyer’s assessment.

The inspection is primarily visual and non-invasive. Selected basic operational checks may be observed where safe, practicable and included in the agreed scope.

Typical Yacht Inspection Scope

Depending on the yacht’s type, construction, equipment and accessibility, the inspection may cover:

  • Hull and structure: accessible hull surfaces, visible damage, coatings, internal structural components and bilge areas.
  • Decks and superstructure: deck fittings, hatches, windows, closures, guardrails and visible signs of wear or deterioration.
  • Through-hull fittings and tanks: accessible seacocks, pipework, tank exteriors and associated installations.
  • Machinery and propulsion: external condition of engines, transmissions, propulsion components and associated machinery.
  • Steering and auxiliary systems: accessible steering arrangements, controls, pumps and other fitted equipment.
  • Electrical installations: visible wiring, batteries, electrical distribution and accessible onboard equipment.
  • Navigation and safety equipment: apparent condition, equipment availability and selected basic operational observations.
  • Accommodation and domestic systems: accessible interior spaces, freshwater and sanitary installations, and indications of moisture or maintenance concerns.

The actual areas examined and any restrictions are recorded in the survey report.

Motor Yacht and Sailing Yacht Surveys

Motor Yacht Pre-Purchase Surveys

Motor yacht inspections place particular emphasis on accessible machinery and propulsion arrangements, steering, auxiliary systems, electrical installations and the condition of the hull and deck.

Additional fitted equipment, including flybridge installations or fishing arrangements, may be examined where applicable and accessible.

Sailing Yacht Pre-Purchase Surveys

Sailing yacht inspections address the general condition of the hull, deck, machinery and onboard systems, together with visual observations of accessible spars, standing and running rigging, sails and deck hardware.

Rigging observations are limited to accessible areas and do not constitute a specialist rigging examination or inspection aloft.

Haul-Out Inspection and Sea Trial Observations

Underwater Hull Inspection

When haul-out is included in the agreed scope, accessible underwater hull surfaces, keel, rudder, propellers and other fitted appendages may be examined.

The extent of the examination depends on hull preparation, surface condition, accessibility and boatyard arrangements.

On suitable hull surfaces, limited non-invasive condition checks may complement visual observations where practicable. These do not establish the absence of concealed structural defects or provide a conclusive diagnosis of osmosis.

Haul-out, launching, cleaning and associated boatyard arrangements are the client’s responsibility and are not automatically included in the survey fee.

Sea Trial Observations

Where expressly agreed, sea-trial attendance allows selected operational characteristics to be observed under the conditions encountered.

These may include propulsion response, steering behaviour, displayed instrument indications and other relevant operating observations.

The yacht remains under the command and operation of its master or authorised personnel. A sea trial does not replace specialist engine diagnostics or provide a performance guarantee.

Survey Findings and Technical Reporting

A yacht pre-purchase survey may identify issues affecting maintenance requirements, equipment condition or the need for further investigation.

Examples documented in yacht condition assessments include:

  • Corrosion or deterioration affecting accessible through-hull fittings.
  • Indications of moisture ingress within accommodation or structural areas.
  • Deteriorated antifouling or significant underwater hull fouling.
  • Oil or fuel residues in machinery spaces and bilges.
  • Safety equipment requiring maintenance, renewal or verification.
  • Incomplete machinery maintenance records.

These are examples of observations, not findings that should be assumed to exist on every yacht.

Following attendance, AB SURVEYORS prepares a Yacht Pre-Purchase Condition Survey Report covering the areas inspected, apparent condition, material findings, relevant recommendations, photographs and limitations.

The report provides technical information for the prospective buyer’s consideration. It does not determine whether the yacht should be purchased.

The survey is a visual, non-invasive assessment of the yacht’s apparent condition at the time of attendance. Its scope, any access restrictions and the limitations of the examination are clearly documented in the final report.

FAQs

What is included in a yacht pre-purchase survey?

The survey covers reasonably accessible parts of the yacht within the agreed scope, typically including hull, decks, machinery, onboard systems, accommodation and safety equipment. Additional arrangements depend on the vessel and the inspection conditions.

Is the yacht inspected out of the water?

Only when haul-out forms part of the agreed inspection. The client is responsible for arranging lifting, launching, preparation and associated boatyard services.

Does the survey include a sea trial?

Sea-trial attendance is available when expressly included in the agreement and subject to safe operating conditions and authorised personnel.

Will the survey identify engine problems?

The survey includes external machinery condition observations and selected basic operational checks where applicable. It is not an internal engine examination or specialist mechanical diagnosis.

How long does a yacht pre-purchase survey take?

The duration depends on the yacht’s size, configuration, accessibility and agreed inspection scope. Haul-out and sea-trial arrangements, where included, may also affect the time required.

How much does a yacht pre-purchase survey cost in Spain?

The fee depends on the yacht’s type, size, location, required attendance and agreed inspection scope. Haul-out, cleaning, launching and other third-party services are not automatically included.
